BIOPARC Valencia operates according to sustainability criteria, integrating environmental protection into the park's daily management, animal welfare, and the visitor experience. This commitment is realized through processes focused on the circular economy, resource efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and continuous improvement.

The environmental strategy is based on the 4Rs principle – reduce, reuse, recycle and recover – and is deployed in key areas such as water, energy, waste, materials, mobility, partnerships and climate footprint measurement.

  • Green and blue ecosystem.
  • Carbon footprint:

    Measurement is an essential tool for transforming environmental commitment into verifiable decisions, and since 2023 BIOPARC Valencia has been calculating its carbon footprint. In 2025, this monitoring will be complemented by the calculation of CO2 removals associated with the park's vegetation, thus incorporating a more complete picture of the climate balance.

    Foundation offsets 82% of its footprint with the sink of the park itself: the net footprint of the exercise is only 48,58 tCO₂e.

The park offers a botanical trail shaded by a diverse array of trees, lush vegetation, and landscaped pergolas, alongside the refreshing waters of waterfalls, streams, and creeks. This combination provides a sense of well-being for visitors and helps mitigate environmental degradation.

BIOPARC contributes to Turia Garden Covering an area of ​​100.000 m2, it ranks among the city's most prominent parks. Its design integrates Mediterranean plants and trees with exotic varieties, including one of the most important acacia collections in Europe.

In terms of landscape, the park boasts 40.000 m² of fully landscaped areas and 6.000 m² of aquatic environment, in addition to pathways, storage areas, and its own plant nursery. This complex represents a valuable asset for mitigating the effects of urban heat and contributing to CO2 absorption.

Likewise, BIOPARC has become a habitat and refuge for native wild speciesIn the park you can see birds such as the kingfisher, the hoopoe, the common moorhen, the grey heron, magpies or egrets, as well as amphibians, bats and, occasionally, the red squirrel reintroduced in the Turia Garden.

In this way, BIOPARC Valencia reinforces its role as urban biodiversity reservoir and helps nature return to the city.

  • Boosting self-production and self-consumption through photovoltaic installations of 70 kWn and 186 kWn at the supply point corresponding to the main electricity consumption of the park, which cover approximately 12,4% of said consumption.
  • Construction and management of a 250 kW biomass boiler, intended to enhance animal welfare and reduce dependence on conventional systems.
  • Use of energy from renewable sources, certified by Guarantees of Origin, which reaches 95% of the energy used.
  • Optimization of electricity consumption by coordinating peak consumption with off-peak periods and sequencing equipment to avoid demand overlaps.
  • Progressive replacement of luminaires with more efficient LED technology.
  • Use of frequency converters with centralized control to optimize the energy required in the pressure groups of the water filtration system.
  • Installation of pressure transducers to improve the performance of pumps and compressors.
  • Automation of industrial processes and use of more efficient, lower-power machinery.
  • Energy monitoring system with network analyzers and web platform visualization to control electricity and gas consumption, analyze load profiles and improve demand management.
  • Conducting energy audits to identify inefficiencies, reduce costs, improve energy efficiency and decrease CO2 emissions.

BIOPARC Valencia has developed an energy improvement strategy based on the implementation and expansion of self-consumption photovoltaic solar installations, with the aim of reducing electricity consumption from the grid, decreasing energy costs associated with the daily activity of the park and advancing towards a more sustainable and efficient management model.

The first photovoltaic installation at BIOPARC Valencia was designed with an approximate power of 70 kW nominalLocated on the park's premises, this project was designed for self-consumption, with the aim of covering part of the high electricity demand of the site, contributing to greater energy independence, and reducing the carbon footprint associated with electricity consumption. The technical project estimated an annual production of 99.476,1 kWh/year, in addition to an associated environmental reduction of approximately 25,13 tons of CO₂ avoided per year.

In May 2026, BIOPARC Valencia expanded this commitment to renewable energy with a new photovoltaic project on several roofs of its facilities. The expansion includes a nominal 186 kW installation, formed by 378 510 Wp photovoltaic modulesThis new installation will operate in conjunction with the existing 70 kW self-consumption installation, significantly reinforcing the renewable generation capacity of the park.

According to the energy study of the expansion project, the new facility will have a estimated annual production of 260.853 kWh/yearIn addition to the planned production of the initial facility, BIOPARC Valencia will have a Total estimated photovoltaic generation exceeding 360.000 kWh per year, intended for the self-consumption of its own facilities.

In energy terms, according to available estimates, the initial 70 kW installation provides approximately 83.442 kWh/year, equivalent to 3,00% of the total consumption of the main electricity supply of the parkThe photovoltaic expansion would contribute an additional 261.478 kWh/year, equivalent to 9,39% of total consumption. Together, both phases would allow approximately 12,4% of the total electricity consumption of this supply to be covered by solar energy.

Overall, this photovoltaic expansion will allow BIOPARC Valencia to significantly reduce its dependence on the electricity grid, stabilize some of its energy costs, and move towards a more efficient and sustainable management model. The production of renewable energy on-site also contributes to reducing the environmental footprint associated with the park's operations, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation.

  • We minimize the consumption of goods, especially water, by incorporating the latest technology:
    – Ecological diffusers.
    – Timers.
    – Smart irrigation.
    – Innovative filtration and purification systems.
    – Reuse.

Selective waste collection is applied in the different activities of the park, promoting the recovery of materials and the proper management of the waste generated.

  • Organic waste: pruning remains, animal feed waste, organic restoration waste and single-use biodegradable materials are sorted for composting.
  • Animal excrement receives a specific treatment to transform it into high-quality fertilizer.
  • Paper, plastic and packaging: separation, sorting and appropriate processing measures are applied.
  • Hazardous waste: electrical and electronic equipment, fluorescent tubes and other waste subject to specific treatment are managed by authorized companies.
  • Reduction of chemical products through ozone equipment in the water purification and disinfection process.
  • Use of biological products in phytosanitary treatments and application of ozonated water for fumigation.
  • Fertigation system in gardening to supply nutrients efficiently and according to the needs of the vegetation.
  • Use of single-use biodegradable packaging in tableware and catering items, including consumer products such as single-dose items. BIOPARC was the first park to eliminate single-use plastic from all utensils and tableware in its restaurantsreplacing them with biodegradable and compostable elements.
  • Use of certified paper and materials, from sustainable or recycled sources.
  • Incorporation of products certified by sustainability criteria into stores.
  • We purchase food for human consumption and animal feed from local suppliers whenever possible, taking seasonality into account. Special attention is paid to local and representative products, such as the certified bomba rice used in our culinary offerings.
  • Selective recycling of different materials.
  • Generating compost with animal excrement and garden pruning waste.
  • Selective collection of waste, packaging and compostable materials in restaurants.

Waste recipients: BIOPARC Valencia promotes alliances with other organizations to drive cross-cutting transformations towards the circular economy and extend the life cycle of products.

  • Promotion of public transport in the park's communication and dissemination materials.
  • Agreements with companies and entities to encourage the use of public transport through discounts or other advantages.
  • Bicycle parking available in the access square.
  • Proximity to shared mobility services.
  • Private public parking with direct access to the park entrance and provision for a charging area for electric vehicles.

Sustainability is also built through education.Therefore, all BIOPARC Valencia's educational activities, both those aimed at schools and the general public, aim to bring people closer to the reality of the most threatened species and ecosystems, to raise awareness of the main threats they face in the natural environment, and to awaken a critical consciousness capable of driving real change.
