BIOPARC Valencia remembers a year of milestones in conservation, animal welfare and commitment to society

To celebrate its anniversary, the animal conservation park is taking stock of the highlights of this emotional year, with important births and also painful deaths, new animal additions and the promotion of awareness-raising activities.

Anniversaries are a reason to celebrate and also a time to look back, remember and learn to face new challenges. In the month that BIOPARC commemorates its 17 years, the assessment of what the latter has meant provides many reasons for optimism. And even more so considering the greatest legacy left to us by the terrible DANA, an immense capacity for empathy and solidarity. A year in which the city has been the European Green Capital and the contribution of the animal conservation park in the consolidation of Valencia has been appreciated due to its high-quality offering and its commitment to a sustainable future.

The year began with enormous joy for both of us Births in the Verus chimpanzee family, a critically endangered subspeciesUnfortunately, the second calf died a few days later and the technical team decided to encourage the mother's natural behaviour in her grief. Once again, we were able to witness the teachings of the animal world through this emotional story that went around the world. The complicity and displays of affection from the group, as well as the vitality and joy of little Cala, have been fundamental in overcoming it.

In March, the expected Second birth of one of the elephants gave birth to Malik, who is now inseparable from his two-year-old “sister” Makena and represents the best example of the success of the conservation programs for endangered species in which BIOPARC participates. Controlled breeding based on scientific criteria is vital to guarantee the survival of these species. Another milestone was the arrival of the imposing pachyderm Tooth.

Others of the “giants” They have also marked important moments such as the confirmation of the first copulations between rhinos or the Incorporation of a young hippopotamus which we can now see in the only underwater view of this species in Spain. BIOPARC has also been a pioneer in our country by hosting the peculiar short-eared elephant shrew.

Another situation of great pain for the entire animal care team to provide them with maximum well-being was The death of the male giraffe July who, with a brood of seven offspring, left a great legacy for the salvation of their critically endangered subspeciesThe numerous births of different species, some "rare" such as mole rats or rock hyraxes reveal the interest in the biodiversity protectionAnd the integration of more animals and species has been very extensive, mainly to promote conservation programs: eastern bongo, Kirk's dik dik, impala, otter, Mhorr gazelle and striped hyena.

The BIOPARC Foundation and its commitment to society.

As a substantial part of the responsibility for the future of the planet, the BIOPARC Foundation has promoted its activity with multiple actions in areas of great value for wildlife and at the same time paying special attention to the environment and closer species such as the newts and the bats. Once again, there was total involvement in the international project for the reintroduction of the Northern Bald Ibis in Europe.

And the two traditional events of the Parades of dogs looking for a home. And that impetus and solidarity was impressively reflected in the citizen response to the call for Help animals affected by DANAThe CEU UCH Veterinary Clinical Hospital, the Valencia College of Veterinarians and BIOPARC, in coordination with the Department of Environment, Water, Infrastructure and Territory, have been providing an essential service to alleviate the needs of pets of individuals, as well as those under the care of animal shelters, refuges, feline colonies or relief groups.

The “for a cause” promotion continues for these 17 years with online tickets at €20+€1 and the B! Annual Pass at €50+€1. The +€1 will be donated through the BIOPARC Foundation to the conservation of the bat, the most emblematic Valencian species.
