The enormous size and potential risk of this very strong species, one of the largest in the world, has involved the intervention of up to 3 people for the complicated transfer of each snake, which can be seen in shocking images.
Continuous improvement to offer the maximum well-being animals is part of the daily work of the BIOPARC technical team. And what could be called routine sometimes involves risky actions in which it is essential to have complete security protocols and specialists in the different species.
In this case, the reptile care group has had to work hard to deal with the transfer of a Seba's Python Couple (Python sebae), The largest snake in Africa and one of the largest on our planetThe larger size of the female, 3,90m long and weighing 34kg, required up to three people at the same time to move her, and the effort with the male, 3m long and weighing 2,70kg, was equally remarkable.
Considering that the facilities are designed to promote the natural behaviour of the nearly 150 different species that BIOPARC houses, each enclosure is unique. The objective was to renovate the terrarium from several areas to achieve an improvement of the whole., which makes it essential to transfer the two specimens separately, as quickly and safely as possible, to a temporary facility for the shortest possible time. And to do so, it is necessary to access the interior enclosure following strict protection guidelines, since they are truly dangerous animals.
Given the complexity, these manipulations are only carried out when it is essential and it is used to carry out veterinary checks, as well as length and weight measurements. A whole process that we can observe in striking images.
In order to improve the well-being of Seba's python, improvements have been made to the facility that they share with two turtles, recreating their original habitat. After the rapid intervention, they are already exploring their enclosure in the savannah of the animal conservation park.
The Seba python terrarium is located in the area that recreates the underground Savannah and is really special since it has been possible to reproduce its habitat by creating a multi-species enclosure where they live with two types of turtles: an aquatic one called the African shield (Pelomedusa subrufa) and another with more terrestrial habits, known as Home's articulated (Kinixys homeana).
The intervention in this environment has succeeded in providing different points of light, also modifying the interior plants, as well as increasing the useful space of the lower and upper part, placing some trunks at height. The latter thanks to the observation and knowledge of the tastes of the male, with a predilection for moving in high areas, which allows interesting views of his movements.
Finally, Different environments are obtained in the same terrarium with more or less lighting, temperature, humidity, etc. and each individual can choose the most favourable conditions for each moment. The care of these species consists of checking their good health daily and ensuring that they are properly fed, every day in the case of turtles and snakes approximately every two weeks, since they have a significantly slower digestion system.
The Seba python is included in the IUCN red list (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and BIOPARC promote knowledge of these species in order to understand the role they play in their ecosystems and to mobilize towards their protection.
The “for a cause” promotion continues through the BIOPARC Foundation for the 17th Anniversary with +1€ to protect the bat as an emblematic Valencian species.
This February BIOPARC celebrates its 17th Anniversary with the double promotion “with a cause” that offers a single price for the online ticket at €20+€1 and the B! Annual Pass at €50+€1. Each +€1 will be allocated through the BIOPARC Foundation to the conservation of the bat, the most emblematic Valencian species.
