Second birth of the year of the Thomson gazelle, one of the most elegant and recognized antelopes of the African savanna and which can only be seen in two parks in Spain.
The image of BIOPARC Valencia's recreation of the African savanna It is truly shocking for the thousands of visitors who come to the park each year. The vision of the large multispecies enclosure in which different types of antelope coexist along with exotic birds and giraffes is a trip to idyllic African places. And, furthermore, the innovative concept of zooimmersion representative of BIOPARC, allows you to see “live” the most characteristic image of documentaries, by contemplating prey and predator in the same visual field, with the sensation that there is no separation between them. All of this with the aim of bringing threatened wild nature closer to society, to thrill with its beauty and motivate a change of attitude towards its protection.
Included in the IUCN Red List of threatened species, the group that houses BIOPARC is integrated into an international project for its conservation.
In this environment, BIOPARC's expert staff remains attentive and provides all the care to a precious Thomson Gazelle breeding (Eudorcas thomsoni) just a few weeks old. The birth of this antelope has occurred within the international conservation program (EEP) of this species in which the park participates with a group of 7 individuals (a male with the females and their young) and which is included in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with “least concern”, but with a worrying decreasing trend. This peculiar small gazelle is grouped in flocks of dozens of individuals and is easily identified by its striking black stripe that separates its reddish-brown backs from its white bellies.
Its impressive ability to maintain a speed of over 70km/h for a long time allows it to escape the attacks of top predators such as lions, leopards and even cheetahs.
Without a doubt, its greatest virtue is the ability to maintain its extraordinary speed which can reach 70-80km/h, almost equaling the fastest mammal that exists, the cheetah. This ability, which combines being the second fastest animal in Africa and enormous resistance, allows it to sometimes survive attacks from other of the fiercest predators, such as lions or leopards.
The BIOPARC team of specialists applied the well-being protocol before birth and during the first weeks he remains in the indoor enclosure with his mother who is raising her and caring for her diligently. It is essential to minimize the risks and in this way you can monitor the process, the correct evolution of your health, nutrition and growth. Given the positive development and confirming that he has sufficient agility and musculature, the expectation is that he will soon be able to begin exploring the outdoor enclosure and join his flock.
