World Wetlands Day

Water and wetland forests

Wetland Forests are the highlight of World Wetlands Day. RAMSAR and Bioparc Valencia have joined the United Nations with its declaration of 2011 as the International Year of Forests.

For 40 years Ramsar has worked to maintain and create a network of Wetlands of International Importance for the conservation of biological diversity and for the sustenance of human life. Wetlands help us manage fresh water; they are biologically diverse and they are our allies in combating climate change. But they are often threatened by development and by the misuse of resources. Our mission is to achieve sustainable development of these valuable places for our survival.

In May 1990, La Albufera de Valencia was included as a Ramsar site. In 2011, as we celebrate 25 years since it s declaration as a Natural Park, it has been proposed that it be declared a Natural Biosphere Reserve. In the vicinity of the cave of Kitum, represented in Bioparc, there are some 15 Ramsar sites forming part of the Grandes Lagos region.

Scheduling the activities of 6 February:

11:00-13:00 Educational table with biological specimens in the cave of Kitum.

11:30-13:00 Kids’ masks workshop in the cave of Kitum.
